From School Library Journal
Grade 1-4-This upbeat look at mainstreaming is told from the point of view of a little girl who sits next to an autistic boy. Louis, who repeats words he hears and has little interaction with his peers, gets away with behavior that the other children cannot, such as mimicking the teacher. One day, after he shows interest in playing soccer with a classmate, Miss Owlie allows both of them to go outside and play during the afternoon, prompting the narrator to point out the unfairness of this treatment. With her teacher's help, the child comes to realize that sometimes it's OK to "break rules for special people." Though the story depicts a fairly innocuous display of autism, which may mislead some readers about the disorder, the main focus is on the development of sensitivity in the other students. Dunbar's childlike paintings cleverly show how Louis is essentially the same as the other kids-he could be any one of the boys in the class, until the artwork focuses more closely on him. An afterword by a child clinical psychologist offers adults more information about autism and mainstreaming.-Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Maryland School for the Deaf, Columbia

From Booklist
Gr. 1-3. Miss Owlie's classroom is a vibrant hum of activity, filled with children who act realistically, if a bit crazily. Double-page spreads convey the frenzied pace. They burst with kids (reminiscent of Jules Feiffer characters) playing and making pictures. Louis, however, remains detached. He mostly sits and stares at the wall or repeats what others say to him or bits of conversations he hears in class. The little girl who sits next to Louis wants to get him involved, and she finally finds a way in a playground soccer game. Though most adults will quickly catch on that Louis is autistic (a clinical psychologist's note at the end, addressed to adults, explains about autism), children might not fully grasp the situation. But that may not matter much, as the story is more about creative kindness and inclusion than it is about autism; it's really a big-hearted example of persistence and compassion, and little ones won't have a problem understanding that. This is a great book. I believe it's a good book for kids starting to understand about differences, and seems to highlight why it's okay to make concessions for kids with Autism, which is a hard concept for children to understand. At the end of the book Louis's 'buddy' realizes that sometimes special people get to do special things. I do feel that for younger kids they may not get the concept, though. I wanted to get a few books to help my sons' cousins/friends understand him a bit better, and this is one of the better ones I got.

Good book as an into for kids
By FXmom
I just used this book with 24 different classes to introdcue the idea of autism and the idea that these students are mainstreamed into their classes. No, it does not mention "autism" though as an adult reading this book to children that explanation can begin with you. Frankly, it is a very true picture of inclusion and the feelings other chdren often have about having a child who is different from them in the classroom. The children I read this to understood that the purpose of Louis being in their classroom was not to learn academics necesssarily, but to begin to understand how to function in the regular classroom. People annoyed that Louis is not "learning anything" are wrong. His position in a regular ed classroom is to learn to socialize since his level of functioning is obviously below those of the peers. The kids I read this too really connected with the book and came away understanding a little more about why the rules may be different for other children with special needs.

The perfect book on the inclusive classroom..
By Jessica Ralli
There is no perfect book on anything, but this one comes very close. As an educator in an inclusive classroom, I search and search constantly for books that serve as great and naturalistic conversation starters on the topic of dis/Ability. This whimsically illustrated story is LOADED with issues: inclusion, making exceptions, social isolation, the ABILITY in dis/ability, and our common humanity. It represents inclusive teaching at its best, and naturally includes a child with Autism in the story, without centering difference, but at the same time, not ignoring it. There are few books on the market that deal as thoughtfully with this complex topic as this one.
