The pages turn very fast indeed....

Thirty-six-year-old Victor Van Allen is being cuckolded, quite blatantly. For a number of years his wife Melinda has paraded a succession of lovers around their small town of Little Wesley, Massachusetts, dragging the men along to the Van Allens' dinner engagements with friends, dancing with them provocatively, entertaining them in night-long debauches in the Van Allens' home. Victor's friends shake their heads or offer him extra desserts at parties--pity food--and they marvel at his reaction to the insult: Victor is a paragon of patience. He allows Melinda her lovers, only wishing that she attracted a higher quality paramour. Still, Victor is not as unconcerned about Melinda's behavior as he appears. He regularly forces himself to stay awake and chaperone his wife's "dates" in their living room rather than please the couple by retiring to his separate bedroom. And, near the beginning of the novel, Victor announces to his wife's most recent flame that he once killed a lover of hers, a certain Malcolm McRae. Victor is lying, but McRae *had* been pummeled to death in his New York apartment, and his murderer had not been identified.

This being a Patricia Highsmith novel, it cannot be a good thing for our put-upon protagonist to confess to a murder he did not commit, and the reader begins at once to wonder how this misstep of Victor's will lead to his undoing. But it is unlikely that readers will correctly anticipate precisely how Victor's story plays itself out.

Patricia Highsmith--the author of, among many other novels, Strangers on a Train and The Talented Mister Ripley--is a master of suspense. Deep Water shares with her other books a certain remarkable slowness. Highsmith's characters unhurriedly attend to the minutiae of their lives. They entertain friends and admire artwork and do the gardening, they take drives and prepare supper. Very often it seems that nothing is happening in one of her books, and yet as the pages turn the reader becomes more and more tense, wondering when precisely the axe will fall--for it certainly will fall. By the end of Deep Water the pages turn very fast indeed.

[Deep Water also shares with some of Highsmith's other novels (Found in the Street) a bizarre vision of parenthood. The Van Allens have a highly disposable daughter, perhaps eight years old, who spends her days in other people's homes, or playing contentedly by herself in her own room. She is sometimes left alone in the house. She is abandoned at the movies when her mother forgets to pick her up. Meanwhile the Van Allens' social calendar is chock full of late-night dinner parties and those uncomfortable threesomes in the living room. Part of this abuse of the daughter has to do with the storyline: Melinda is intended to be a very poor mother. But Victor, the "good" parent, leaves the house for those parties just as often as his wife does.]

At last . . .

I'm happy that this -- one of Patricia Highsmith's finest novels -- is back in print, because it deserves to be read.
The set-up is that Vic and Melinda are unhappily married, but rather than divorce, since they have a daughter, he lets her go off and have affairs (this seems quite an interesting concept to have proposed in 1957, when this book came out) -- and you'd think that surely, a little jealousy might come in on his part, right? Right. . . . And from here, it goes off in some interesting directions. I really didn't expect the ending. And now that it's finally available, go ahead and get it! You're missing a great novel otherwise.

This is a story about the complicated and very obscure structures of social life in the suburbia of New York. It's the story of the quite nice guy who becomes a murderer. The most remarkable thing in my opinion is the fact that you, as the reader, identify yourself with Vic Van Allen, the evil one, the murderer. You can understand him and his acting, you get the feeling that he is the betrayed one, the victim, but in fact he is the bad one, he is a murderer! That's very special.

Unless you know the artist and just want it for the sake of supporting them, which is fine too. Really though, this was an extremely short tutorial (I guess it would be since it's a chibi right?) and is nothing that couldn't be found for free online. The picture on the front was cute so decided to buy it, but have only looked through it once and didn't really see anything I wanted to go back and try.

Oh well, it's pretty cheap. If you like the image on front and want to know how to draw it, by all means, go for it! But if you are looking for something more in depth, there are probably better resources online.

nothing new here, rather this very brief eBook is a concise ( i.e. limited in scope and detail ) overview of how to draw chibi

all this is available elsewhere ( on hundreds of pages, in fact ) on the 'net, and in greater detail. videos as well, for those so inclined

my hope was to find some tips that were intuitive or obvious to those more talented than i. no such luck

easily a third of the pages are devoid of instruction, and are rather devoted to an index, references to other books, single chibi drawings ( similar to cover art ), and disclaimers

glad it was only a couple of bucks

Great Chibi Drawing Guide

I like drawing and enjoy trying new things. I've always been a little intimidated by Manga but Chibis seemed much simpler so I figured I would try out this guide. This book offers basic steps for drawing bodies and eyes of Chibis. Pretty cool. I was quickly (forgive my pun) drawn in. For this price it was well worth my money.

It advocates a strategic approach through which an institution sets clear goals and metrics and integrates the identity support work of cultural / diversity centers with skill building through cohort activities, enabling students to successfully navigate college, graduate on time and transition to the world of work. Underlying the process is an intersectional and identity-conscious, rather than identity-centered, framework that addresses the complexity of students’ assets and needs as they encounter the unfamiliar terrain of college.

In the current landscape of higher education, colleges and universities normally divide their efforts between departments and programs that explicitly work on developing students’ identities and separate departments or programs that work on retaining and graduating higher-risk students. This book contends that the gap between cultural/diversity centers and institutional retention efforts is both a missed opportunity and one that perpetuates the opportunity gap between students of color and low-income students and their peers.

Identity-consciousness, the central framework of this book, differs from an identity-centric approach where the identity itself is the focus of the intervention. For example, a Latino men’s program can be developed as an identity-centered initiative if the outcomes of the program are all tied to a deeper or more complex understanding of one’s Latino-ness and/or masculinity. Alternately, this same program can be an identity-conscious student success program if it is designed from the ground up with the students’ racial and gender identities in mind, but the intended outcomes are tied to student success, such as term-to-term credit completion, yearly persistence, engagement in high-impact practices, or timely graduation.

Following the introductory chapter focused on framing how we understand risk and success in the academy, the remaining chapters present programmatic interventions that have been tested and found effective for students of color, working class college students, and first-generation students. Each chapter opens with a student story to frame the problem, outlines the key research that informs the program, and offers sufficient descriptive information for staff or faculty considering implementing a similar identity-conscious intervention on their campus. The chapters conclude with a discussion of assessment, and suggested “Action Items” as starting points.

About the Author
Vijay Pendakur Dr. Vijay Pendakur serves as an Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at California State University – Fullerton. Prior to joining Cal State Fullerton, Dr. Pendakur served as the Director for the Office of Multicultural Student Success, a department charged with increasing the retention and persistence of low-income students, first generation students, and students of color at DePaul University in Chicago. He holds a bachelor's degree in history and East Asian studies from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, a master's degree in U.S. history from the University of California, San Diego, and a doctorate in education from DePaul University.

Shaun R. Harper is on the faculty in the Graduate School of Education, Africana Studies, and Gender Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also serves as director of the Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education. He is co­founder of the Penn GSE Black Male Grad Prep Academy, an initiative that prepares undergraduate men for doctoral study in education fields.

Professor Harper maintains an active research agenda that examines race and gender in higher education, Black male college access and achievement, and college student engagement. He is author of over 80 peer-­reviewed journal articles and other academic publications. His 10 books include: Student Engagement in Higher Education (2009, 2014), College Men and Masculinities (2010), and the 5th edition of Student Services: A Handbook for the Profession (2011).

He is co-editor of the Stylus Engaged Research and Practice for Social Justice in Education series; editor-in-chief of the Routledge book series on Race and Racism in U.S. Higher Education; and associate editor of Educational Researcher, a journal of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

Dr. Harper is principal investigator of the New York City Black and Latino Male High School Achievement Study, a project that entailed individual interviews with 415 young men of color from 40 public high schools. Several associations have praised his scholarship, including the Association for the Study of Higher Education (2008 Early Career Award), AERA (2010 Early Career Award), and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (2012 Robert H. Shaffer Award for Faculty Excellence).

This is a beautifully put together book on Bondage. The pictures are in bright living color and the detail, that went into this book, were right on and explain the finer acts of both Bondage and BDSM. It is both an illistrated book on Bondage and a fine Artbook as well. It is one of the better books in my extensive library of BDSM I have as a writer.

A Luxurious Journey to a Land of Rope, Skin, Sensations, and Kink!

Bondage Basics takes you on a luxurious journey to a land of rope, skin, sensations, and kink. Through Morpheous's rich prose, you can not only melt into the captivating imagery, but you can truly learn how to wow a new lover, talk shop with a rigger, seduce a rope bunny, or spice up your established love life. The stunning array of shibari "glamcore" photographs help to comfort even the most tentative of early-stage kinksters as they begin their journey into the amazingly sexy and sensual world of modern rope bondage. While I was reading this book, I felt my senses and imagination pulled in multiple directions. This book is a joy to read because it combines history, sex, art, and puzzle solving in a manner that isn't intimidating or raunchy. To clarify, part of me wanted to immediately acquire a bundle of cotton and jute fibers, twisted lovingly and meticulously by one of the rope making masters. Another part of me wanted to put on some eyelashes and let myself flow into a rope bondage scene as others admire how each layer of knots compliment my skin tone. Yet another part of me wanted to put on my glasses, sit down, and practice tying each and every knot that is outlined in this entry-level text that's complete with a plethora of helpful photos. It can be hard to choose what urge to satisfy first, but this book is certainly not only an art piece, an instruction manual, and an informational guide to the history of rope bondage. It's also a key into a new chapter of your love life. Read it with your mind and your body open to exploration and you will end up pleasantly surprised what one beautiful book can lead to! Lord Morpheous' 'Bondage Basics' is very informative yet easy read for those interested in learning bondage. This book is exactly what the name claims and more! Morpheous' delightful personality and obvious passion draws in the reader and smoothly guides them throughout the book from cover to cover. His personal stories and expertise along with a welcoming level of author/reader interaction make this Kink-Ed very user-friendly, fun and exciting. There are plenty of sultry, breathtaking yet artsy & tasteful HD pictures featuring beautiful models on almost every page that make this book as sexually tantalizing as it is educational.

The author assumes the reader possesses a prior knowledge of zero for anything bondage related, which makes this book a perfect kick-starter for beginners as well as an interesting and entertaining read for the more experienced. From explaining about the history & origins of the different styles of rope bondage based on region & culture (my personal favored part) to blessing you with helpful and very necessary suggestions on choosing your equipment, your play partner, getting involved in the larger scene and most importantly guidelines and instructions for playing safe with focus on consent.

It's a fact of life that we get older. When we stop getting older, we'redead. Maybe instead of fighting the aging process, we could enjoy it a lot moreby embracing aging and using some simple but powerful techniques. Perhaps achange in thinking as well as in how we behave would be helpful.

It's really encouraging that early in the book, we're given the names offolks who have accomplished a lot in what others would call their golden years:at 91 Henry Kissinger added another book to his dozen plus ones; Phyllis Suescelebrated her 92nd birthday in 2015 by dancing the Tango; she took up theTango and the trapeze at the age of 80; Dick Van Dyke starred in a music videoin 2015 at the age of 89; many other examples are given.

What do these folks have in common? According to the author, they are"happy, grateful, optimistic, and appreciative." She then goes on to give ussome great ideas about how to accomplish this by choices we make in our dailylives. Many of the concepts are found in other programs not specifically aimedat the concept of aging, but I like that she focused them specifically forolder adults.

No matter your age, this book is filled with ideas that can help you live along, fruitful, and happy life. The title, by the way, is taken from one ofAbraham's workshops where he stated this is the way to live: happy, healthy...dead!--New Spirit Journal

This was a delightful read. The extensive examples were right on the nose. I kept finding myself in so many of the vignettes. Of course, this made it even more enjoyable to read. I could not recommend this more highly. I loved the title...as a friend of mine used to say: nobody gets out alive! ;-)

I know some of this info, but i hadn't considered it in terms of aging! Wow. She was right, much of what I thought about aging was incorrect. Great book, fun read. Love dr. Nelson's sense of humor.
