Father Comes Home From the Wars (Parts 1, 2 & 3), by Suzan-Lori Parks

Finalist, 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Drama

"The finest work yet from this gifted writer."—The New York Times

Offered his freedom if he joins his master in the ranks of the Confederacy, Hero, a slave, must choose whether to leave the woman and people he loves for what may be another empty promise. As his decision brings him face to face with a nation at war with itself, the ones Hero left behind debate whether to escape or wait for his return, only to discover that for Hero, freedom may have come at a great spiritual cost. A devastatingly beautiful dramatic work, Father Comes Home from the Wars (Parts 1, 2, & 3) is the opening trilogy of a projected nine-play cycle that will ultimately take us into the present.

Suzan-Lori Parks became the first African American woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her play Topdog/Underdog in 2002. Her other plays include The Book of Grace, In the Blood, Venus, The Death of the Last Black Man in the Whole Entire World, Fucking A, Imperceptible Mutabilities in the Third Kingdom and The America Play. In 2007 her 365 Days/365 Plays was produced at more than seven hundred theaters worldwide. Parks is a MacArthur Fellow and the Master Writer Chair at the Public Theater.

Review
"One of the top plays of the year... A richly textured mix of Brechtian allegory and Homeric epic, finding new meaning in an essential American tragedy.” —Richard Zoglin, Time

"By turns philosophical and playful, lyrical and earthy, Father Comes Home from the Wars (Parts 1, 2 & 3) swoops, leaps, dives and soars, reimagining a turbulent turning point in American history through a cockeyed contemporary lens... The wonder of Ms. Parks’s achievement is how smoothly she blends the high and the low, the serious and the humorous, the melodramatic and the grittily realistic." —Charles Isherwood, New York Times

"Suzan-Lori Parks’s stunning new drama is that rare work of art: one that bears the heavy burden of its subject matter—the peculiar institution of American slavery— but that carries it lightly... Parks brings the full force of her dramatic power. She both elevates her themes with echoes of classic literature, while at the same time doubling down on comedy... This is serious work that is seriously entertaining." —Thom Geier, Entertainment Weekly

"The best new play of the year... It is bold, hugely entertaining, moving and thrillingly ambitious. Suzan-Lori Parks bids fair to create a sprawling multi-part epic to plant alongside August Wilson’s monumental Century Cycle, one of the great achievements in theater history. Parts 4 through 9 (or more?) can’t come fast enough." —Michael Giltz, Huffington Post

"Suzan-Lori Parks may reach back to the ancient Greeks for references and structure, but her play delivers an in-themoment gut punch. Father Comes Home from the Wars is an insightful, poetic, often heartbreaking look at the devastations of war and slavery and the complications of freedom." —Robert Feldberg, Bergen Record

"One of the most provocative playwrights we have." —Linda Winer, Newsday

"Can one-third of something already be a masterpiece? Seems like it to me... People long for stories that engage the deepest possible issues in the most gripping possible ways. Father Comes Home from the Wars is one of those
stories—or maybe more than one." —Jesse Green, New York

"Brilliant, beautiful . . . This haunting work is funny and tragic, whimsical and lacerating, poetic and poignant... If Parks can sustain her sprawling project at this level as it moves forward, there’s every reason to hope it will ultimately become no less significant and emotionally resonant an undertaking than August Wilson’s ten-play Century Cycle." —David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter

"Parks’s richest, most satisfying play... The real news isn’t that Parks has hit the mark with a complex and ambitious work—she undoubtedly has. It’s that the playful spirit of her best work turns out to be alive and well." —Tom Sellar, Village Voice

"Suzan-Lori Parks has finally arrived at classical proportions: her Civil War triptych is built along the sharp, symmetrical lines of Greek tragedy and Homeric epic... The language is poetic and formal, a modified nineteenth-century slave idiom, imbued with Parks’s improvisatory, jazzy irreverence... After decades in which Parks encouraged us to get lost in the holes of history, she’s playing where theater began: with song, story, ritual and catharsis." —David Cote, Time Out New York

"Provocative and rich... earthy and irreverently funny, neither pompous tragedy nor Ken Burns–type reenactment." —Elisabeth Vincentelli, New York Post

One of the most singular plays I've ever read. I love Guirgis, but I do not understand how this did not win the Pulitzer. I love having a hard copy for plays like this, and the sleek and thematic dual front and back covers are a gorgeous addition to this unmatched play. It will live on as a classic long after Parks' death. Do yourself a favor and buy it.

Not bad. I kept reading the play looking for an "aha" moment that brought some new insight into the motivations of many Black Confederates but didn't see anything very new or dramatic.

It may help to use additional resources with the book
By A Customer
The pros about this book:
1. I really enjoyed the sample problems in the book. It helped prepare me for the additional problems in the book.
2. For the most part, I understood everything. Reading it was not too difficult.
The cons about this book:
1. Some answers were incorrect. I had to speak with the instructor to get a couple of problems cleared.
2. The worst is that there is a solution manual available for only the Odd problems. I'd prefer a solution manual with both even and odd problems so that I can compare my work with and not hassle the professor's as much as i do to make sure i'm understanding the material.

Under valued

Chemistry - The molecular Science. Written in the Preface - "Success in general chemistry requires a blend of ingredients. It requires a clearly presented body of information and we hope you find it in this textbook". My comments, as an older student of chemistry and in my case, electrochemistry, this book not only gives one the information but also background to that information. It 'teaches' the reader. It has the ability with just a few well chosen words and 1612 illustrations to give the reader many 'ah ha' moments that puts many pieces of half information together. Knowing what I now know about this book I see a value of hundreds of dollars and not the pittance I paid. Thanks Amazon, I am at last on my way. I recommend this book to any serious chemistry student.

Why don't they use books by Wiley in high schools?
By Spandexter
That is the gold question because Wiley Publishers put out some amazing books. A highly organized index, comprehensive tables for electron affinity, ionization energies, thermodynamic functions, equilibrium constants and standard redox potentions are all here for the intermediate/advanced reader while all the fundamentals from bonding to composition are here. The book focuses heavily on electron relationsips in bonding and the effects of intermolecular forces. Large colorful charts and diagrams are shown on every page. There are multiple examples throughout every chapter with an adbundance of questions at the end. The only complaint is an incomplete periodic table as it only shows molar mass, valence configuration, the atomic number, and the elemental symbol. Great book with good organization. 5 Stars.

First Girl Scout: The Life of Juliette Gordon Low, by Ginger Wadsworth

Just in time for the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts in 2012, comes this lavishly illustrated account of the fascinating life of the woman who started it all. Juliette (Daisy) Gordon Low was a remarkable woman with ideas that were ahead of her time. She witnessed important eras in U.S. history, from the Civil War and Reconstruction to westward expansion to post-World War I. And she made history by founding the first national organization to bring girls from all backgrounds into the out-of-doors. Daisy created controversy by encouraging them to prepare not only for traditional homemaking but also for roles as professional women--in the arts, sciences, and business--and for active citizenship outside the home. Her group also welcomed girls with disabilities at a time when they were usually excluded. Includes author's note, source notes, bibliography, timeline, places to visit, the Girl Scout Promise and Law, and musical notation for the favorite scout song "Make New Friends."

"...a good-looking volume, illustrated with historical photographs, set on pages that resemble pale green embroidered linen and sparkling with the force of Low's enthusiasm."  - The Wall Street Journal

"...a biography as engaging as it is comprehensive.... Neatly framed photographs and other period documents related to Low are smoothly incorporated into the book's overall clean design, appearing against pale green pages sometimes printed with a fabric texture that nods toward the Scouts' uniforms.  ...skillfully sets Low's life story against historical backdrops...." -Publisher's Weekly

"Wadsworth captures Low’s stubborn but charismatic spirit by blending facts and humorous sketches in this winning biography of a woman whose visions and ideas have helped shape the lives of girls around the world." --Horn Book

"Unvarnished prose, plentiful images and vivid anecdotes set in historical perspective make this chronological account lively and accessible for middle-grade readers." --Kirkus Reviews

The "Daisy" Who Changed the World
By Someone Else
Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low's life is a wonderful example of how you can find your passion late in life and still make a big difference in the world. She was a very talented and energetic lady, but she frittered away her early years with dilettantism and made a bad marriage that left her widowed but wealthy. It wasn't until she was over fifty that she was inspired by Sir Robert Baden-Powell to bring the Girl Guides program (later renamed Girl Scouts) to the United States. Once she'd finally found her life's purpose, she became a different woman. She was focused and unstoppable, even while battling the cancer that eventually took her life.

This book covers Juliette Gordon Low's entire life. It's full of interesting history, but the first half has almost nothing about Girl Scouts. That's not a criticism of the book, it's just the way Daisy's life unfolded. I do think I would have wanted to know that ahead of time if I'd been handed the book as a youngster. I would have grown impatient wondering when it was going to get to the part about Girl Scouts. Even as an adult I was eager to get to that part, and I enjoyed the second half more than the first.

Ginger Wadsworth has written several other books for young people, and she's also had a lifelong passion for the Girl Scout program. She's done a wonderful job with this biography. It's a must-read for anyone with a fondness for the Girl Scout organization, past and present. It's fun to compare your own experiences with those of the early Girl Scouts with regard to badges earned, service projects, and the uniforms they wore. The book has a lot of photos and copies of documents and advertisements to give you a real feeling for the era.

Juliette Gordon Low was a spirited and liberated woman way ahead of her time who set out to inspire and liberate women for generations to come. She wasn't able to have children of her own, but all of us whose lives were shaped by Girl Scouting are her girls. She really did change the world.

not for younger Scouts
By ReneeSuz
First Girl Scout tells the entire life story of Juliette Gordon Low. It is a very visually pleasing book with lots of photos, nice layout, and eye catching cover. Each chapter's title is shown as a Scout badge.
This title is being advertised for ages 9 and up but I would not give this book to a child so young as we do learn about Juliette's husband having a mistress. I think because of that incident being included, the book should be reserved for middle school students and older. Although written for youth, adults will find this nearly 200 page book an enjoyable read to learn about the founder of Girl Scouts in the USA.
