A twist on the mermaid tale

We got to meet Silvia in Ms. Sage’s Cinderella. She wasn’t a very sympathetic character. She was actually one of the characters I liked least. So, I thought this story of the little siren would be interesting. Could Silvia become a heroine in her own right? Because every villain is a hero in their own story. In this case, it’s simply a matter of misplaced blame and someone who just flat doesn’t stand up for herself. What good would it do anyway. She’d be blamed for any turn around because her voice does things to people, she is after all a siren. This story starts years before Cinderella, at least a moment of it. But the true story begins near the end of that book.

Silvia met Erik and his son Sebastian on a ship. When a storm threatened to capsize everything, she saved them both from certain death. The king of Atlantis, Morgan, condemned her for being responsible for the storm and preventing two people from dying, she was banished from the waters altogether. When they came back together again, she had her voice sealed. Erik was engaged to be married to someone else, but Morgan realized who she was and was determined to get her, even if that meant tearing apart the entirety of Europa (not the moon of Jupiter). And this is their story.

Silvia IS a likable character even if she herself doesn’t feel so. Erik was ok. I wasn’t as keen on him, but I am curious what he was. He can’t be simply human if he has such insane pull on women. Ella is a testament to that. We do see Dane and Ella and Sandro, and they do play a role in this story. We also get a bigger clue about something that happened to Sandro in Cinderella, as well as a peek of some future something for Dane and Ella. There are a lot of elements in this story that I’m glad the author mentioned getting into later on. Because Silvia’s mom and Sandro, and what the heck happened to…well…you’ll need to read it for yourself. You’ll know what I’m referring to.

Ms. Sage’s story of the Little Mermaid is unique. And while there are some major naughty times it isn’t the entirety of the book with a thin story thrown in. This is a complex and detailed story with some kinky, naughty times thrown in. And so, while I wouldn’t qualify it as erotica based on frequency of sex and coarse language, it is DEFINITELY kinky, and in books that would qualify it as such. (There’s even a position I wasn’t aware had a name mentioned!) So, would I recommend this book? IF you’re looking for a naughty twist on your childhood fairy tales, I’d most definitely recommend this read. If you’re young or offended by such things, then please do not read this book, as it isn’t meant for you.

A Little Siren is a great retelling of The Little Mermaid. I enjoyed reading about Silvia's past (the way her dark secret is revealed is fantastic) and the way she handles her life today. She's a strong woman who is fighting against prior hurts. Erik is a king searching for the woman who saved him years ago. The way their relationship unfolds kept me turning pages.

This is the second book in this series. May Sage has recreated the fairy tale and created a modern world filled with the magic and characters we love from the classic fairy tales. I loved the first one, I love this one, and I can't wait for the next one.

Reading her books is an amazing escape from reality

Ok I read Cinderella first, and while I seriously suggest to everyone to read this after Cinderella, this book can stand alone in its awesomeness. It's not the same old played out fanfiction or what not. Ms. Sage has created a multilayer world with many new creations and views that are just incredible- fairytale meets mythology meets adult situations. And yes by adult I mean tastefully done taboo subjects, blatantly laid out there unashamed but tasteful nonetheless. Reading her books is an amazing escape from reality.

Funny Poems About School

This is another cute book that contains funny poems about school. It is excellent for use with primary students. My favorites are Dot to Dot and a Sick Day Trick. Absolutely hilarious! Great for starting the morning work and for introducing topics and concepts.

He takes "Charley" under his wing, teaching her to be the finest horseman and the best coachman in the state. As she guides her coach across the countryside, she tells her passengers, "I know my horses by heart and I'm not one for bad drivin', so hold tight!" In Pam Muñoz Ryan's fictionalized biography (Scholastic, 1998) set in the mid 1800s, Charlotte was raised in an orphanage, loved tending and riding the horses, and yearned for a ranch of her own one day. Banned from the stables, the 12-year-old ran away from the orphanage, disguised herself as a man, became a skilled stagecoach driver, and eventually was the first woman to cast a vote in the California presidential election. Listeners will admire Charley's grit and determination, refusing to give up her dream, even when she was seriously injured and blinded in one eye. Melissa Hughes's narration is superb. She uses her mellifluous voice well, switching easily from raspy Charley to several other male and female characters and employing different regional accents. After the story, Ryan provides additional historical information about Parkhurst's interesting life. Horse aficionados will appreciate the author's attention to detail in recreating the bustling activity of stable and ranch life, while others will enjoy the well-paced adventure and respect Charlotte's determination to meet life head on. Brian Selznick's full-page shaded pencil illustrations show the quiet, daring young woman in man's stiff clothing; they express her yearning and loneliness as well as her deadpan mischief and her bond with the horses she loved. A book about courage and self esteem for girls!

My seven year old and I read this book together and we both loved it! This story is so well written. Both of us were fully entranced in the story. This is a must have for all girls- telling the story of a girl who wanted her rights and fought for them. The authors note at the end was really helpful and provided a great deal of detail about the real life story and gave my daughter and I a lot to talk about.

"Strange News from Another Star" is a short fairy tale written by Hermann Hesse in April 1915, one year after the start of the 1st World War. In the fairy tale, two stars are juxtaposed.

On one star, life is valued, beauty is appreciated, reason is respected, humane traditions are cultivated, love and happiness are experienced and peace prevails.

On the other star, jealousy, hatred and despair are cultivated, wars are waged incessantly, battlefield murder is officially condoned, the countryside is left strewn with unattended cadavers and fear prevails.

The latter is clearly our world as Hesse saw it, rendered mythical, and the former is an idealized world that ours could be.

Unlike his earlier works, the story does not lend itself to rational interpretation. It is essentially a fairy tale dealing with the subconscious, magic and the dream world.

The fairy tale represents an intermediate stage between Hesse's initial ambiguous stance to the war, as an internationalist who tolerated war and a pacifist who looked forward to a German victory, and his later active anti-war campaign.

The story, which was titled “Merkwürdige Nachricht von einem anderen Stern” in German, was one of several that brought Hesse into conflict with supporters of the war, his country and its government.

More personal matters, such as automatic-writing seances with his wife and his theosophical treatise The Vision, are of less interest to the historian-biographer than Yeats's public figure, including his battles with Catholic censorship and his dubious but brief association with the "Blueshirt" fascist faction. Even as history caught up with and overtook the Free State senator and Nobel laureate, Foster splendidly rounds out the Celtic Twilight bard's inner revolution in his magnificent twilight years.

Roy Foster is Carroll Professor of Irish History at the University of Oxford and a fellow of Hertford College. His books include Charles Stewart Parnell: The Man and His Family, Lord Randolph Churchill: a Political Life (OUP, 1981), Modern Ireland 1600-1972, Paddy and Mr Punch, and The Irish Story: Telling Tales and Making It Up in Ireland. The prize-winning first volume of this biography, W.B. Yeats, A Life. I: The Apprentice Mage 1865-1914 was published by OUP in 1997.

The Thrilling Conclusion

This is, without any hesitation, the best, most readable, and most comprehensive Yeats biography that I've ever read, and the combination of comprehensive and readable is a master-stroke in itself. This poet has been my passion for going on five years, and the gift of having this book in existence is inexpressible.

Meticulous and Inspired

This book may be much better than four stars but to be honest I stopped reading after about half way. This was not because of any fault of the book, simply because my interest was not sustained. There are some things about Yeats I understand and some things I do not. I understand his love of the land and of tradition, I understand his interest in the past and Irish mythology, and I understand his promotion of Irish cultural life, the energy he put into the Abbey Theatre, and his carefully measured but at times passionate support for the independence movement. I also have an interest in how the occult becomes a constant theme in Yeats' poetry and his interest in the relationship between image and truth, 'How can you know the dancer from the dance?'

But for me the real interest in Yeats is his struggle to arrive at the kind of plateau he seems to have arrived at by the mid 1920s, from which point he seems to repeat old themes, and whatever there is that is new and further refined somehow ceases to engage me.

For me the vital chapters of this book are those that deal with the sudden re-arousal of Yeats' ferocious political instincts which occurs at the time of the Black and Tans, (as evidenced by his poem 'Reprisals', a fine poem never before printed but here included), and then Foster's careful discussion of 'A Vision', which I have never read but intend to, and which is no doubt a summary of many of his beliefs.

As in the first volume Foster's approach is exhaustive and meticulous without being dry or disinterested. All his relationships are hung up to dry, but for me are perhaps less fascinating than in the earlier volume. The relationships which most interest me are those with Gonne, Synge and Gregory, and to some extent his wife; those that came later don't grab me and unless I'm missing something it is Synge and Gonne more than anyone who turn up again and again in his poetry throughout his life.

Roy Foster has lived up to the standard he set in the first volume of this biography. This is deeply researched, well-written, and wonderfully informative account of Yeats's life.

Simply The Best!

A solid foundation is critical to understanding concepts. So you'd think most books would spend a lot of time ensuring and clarifying the basics, right? Wrong! Simply not true! Most of the accounting/finance books just don't get into clarifying the very basics - the confusing array of terms used, how they fit together, what they actually mean in a real world setting, etc.

This book - a must on every manager’s shelf - adds value by providing clear and concise definitions and relates them visually. The chapter on connections ties a lot of information together with such ease. Above all the step by step examples go a long long way into clarifying any remaining confusion you'd have. It is very easy to read. You'd probably finish it over a weekend. So it is tremendous bang for buck.

Clearly the first introductory book one should read. There are plenty of good books for the next level (IMHO).

#7 - has a decent cd of spreadsheets for ready use (proforma cash flows, ledgers, etc; very handy)

It has been 9 years since I first wrote this review and I felt like it was time I updated it. While, I continue to be interested in this topic (and my quest to find simple, educational and illustrative books is always ongoing), there are a few noteworthy books that I intend to add to this essentially solid list of “accounting/finance absolutely elementary” books. So here it is. And importantly thank you for your feedback and comments. Many of you have written asking me to update this list. I welcome and appreciate your feedback.

My position and recommendation is essentially the same (after all these years). **__This book continues to be the __very best__ introductory book on this topic__**. No two ways about it – **_Simply go get it - read it. Enjoy the clarity in your decision making. Highly recommended._**

1. Financial statements (Thomas Ittelson, this book)
2. How to use financial statements: a guide to understanding the numbers (James Bandler)
3. How to read a financial report: wringing vital signs out of numbers (John A. Tracy and Tage Tracy)
4. Bookkeepers boot camp: get a grip on accounting basics (Angie Mohr)
Infact, Angie Mohr has written an excellent series of 3 books which I will compare and rate below:

5. Managing by the numbers: a commonsense guide to understanding and using your company’s financials (Chuck Kremer and Ron Rizzuto with John Case)
Part 2 of this book - "Understanding the big picture" is especially excellent. A financial scorecard tool (pg 68 & 69) is just fantastic and describes how linkages between the statements really work. Its worth buying this book just for this section, IMHO.
6. Financial intelligence, revised edition: a managers guide to knowing what the numbers really mean (Karen Berman and Joe Knight)
7. Accounting for the numberphobic: a survival guide for small business owners (Dawn Fotopulos)
8. Financial statement analysis: the investors self-study to interpreting & analyzing financial statements, revised edition (Charles J. Woelfel)
9. Analysis for financial management (Robert C. Higgins) - This is one excellent book.
10. Financial analysis tools and techniques: a guide for managers (Eric A. Helfert)
11. Finance & accounting for nonfinancial managers (Steven A. Finkler)

MBA Level:
12. Principles of finance with excel (Simon Benninga) – Another excellent and practical book (help you translate your learnings into excel)
- BTW, Simon Benninga has written a super awesome MBA level textbook in “Financial Modelling”
13. Corporate finance: theory and practice (Damodaran)
- Corporate finance is a dated but good verbose detailed text book. It has a very good advanced level introductory chapter on financial statements. Pick it up at a library and ...

I'd recommend - #1 and #4 above. (my recommendation has changed)

** If you could buy 3 books (for an in depth managerial understanding):

** If you want a solid grasp (i.e. mastery) of this topic:
I'd recommend - #1, #4, #5, #9 and #12. (i agree, it’s a few books)

** If you are a startup or a small business and want a managerial understanding:
I’d recommend - #1, #4 (the entire set of 3 books), and #5 above. (and you can have meaningful conversations with your accountant)

This is an excellent book for learning or reviewing basic financial information

This is an excellent book for learning or reviewing basic financial information. There are only 2 things that, I think, would have made the book even better; 1) it would have been nice if it included a CD of an Excel template for the Appleseed Co. I made my own, and did the transactions, which was helpful in getting comfortable with the different finacial statements. and 2) If the author would have used the correct "debit" and "credit" terminology in reference to the balance sheet. I know it's technical and not necessary for getting a handle on the 3 different sheets, but I think it's always better to use the correct terms.
