Anesthesia and antisepsis were introduced. Newly established medical schools improved surgeons’ understanding of the human body. About the Author
Richard Barnett is currently the director of studies in history, Pembroke-King’s Program, University of Cambridge, and honorary research fellow, UCL. His writing has appeared in The Lancet, The London Magazine, and The Natural Death Handbook. He is the author of Crucial Interventions, Medical London: City of Diseases, City of Cures and The Sick Rose.

This book is full of beautifully drawn illustrations of surgical procedures with a running thread of "chapters" retelling the history of the specialty. I appreciated the detailed art, but this is definitely not for the faint of heart.

Beautiful book throughout.. The type of the cover is foil stamped into fabric. Every detail has been considered. Gave it as a gift to a psych student, wanted to keep it for myself. Buy 2!
