A good review of the few resistance movements within Nazi Germany. Great for a primer, and for use as a base reference for knowledge of where to look for more in depth materials for Nazi Reistance movements within Germany.

Covers the ground well

It can be difficult to find resources on opposition to the Nazi regime, a feature often neglected by textbooks. I was teaching an A level synoptic unit on the Third Reich and found McDonough's book to provide an excellent basis for study of this area, replete with good primary source material as a primer to unpick the issues.

Short and Sweet...

Considering the length of this book, there's a lot left to be desired. Nonetheless, this book is great in terms of its concision and the author is a well-respected scholar. If you are looking for a quick and succinct overview of the opposition into Nazi Germany, the breadth of this short work is commendable. McDonough touches on how industrial workers, Social Democrats, and Communists initially fought against the Nazis. He also demonstrates how passive resistance was present from some student groups and covers the tragic, if not heroic efforts of active agents like the White Rose. Despite their eventual acquiescence, McDonough also discusses the religious opposition to Hitler from the Christian Church. Finally, the author briefly elaborates on the conservative and military resistance, including the Stauffenberg Bomb Plot in July of 1944.

Using short excerpts from original source material as well as expert historical analysis and astute judgement, McDonough does a good job in a short space. However, if you are looking for more depth into the Nazi resistance and opposition, you might want to check out 'Contending with Hitler' by David Clay Large, 'Alternatives to Hitler' by Hans Mommsen or 'The History of the German Resistance' by Peter Hoffmann. Any one of these books will provide a more thorough and penetrating analysis on this subject. For those of you who like "short and sweet" - then this book is what you'd want..

Must read if you are a wine lover!

Did you know that most of the wine sold in the world contains A LOT more then simply grapes. About 50 additives are allowed by EU, and it the same in the US. There is a counter culture to this making delicios wine that contain, simply grapes. And if you try it a few time, you will never go back. (Or at least I didn't)

This book is explaining the natural wine movement in a fairly simple way, from how the grapes are grown to how they are treated, and the different approaches. And one of the best things is that it contains a huge list of must try wines as well.. As a bit of a rookie in this exciting world, it's a great start. Cheers!

Isabelle is a treasure.

A friend. Someone who is working to make a difference in the wine world. A huge contributor to the understanding of Natural Wines through her RAW Faires in London.

And the author of this lovely book.

She starts by sharing an epiphany.

While viewing the manicured landscape from her friend’s house in Cornwall one weekend, she realized that the perfect picture was truly an image of agricultural decline, not pristine beauty. An example of the destructive effects of monoculture to the natural health of the land. And our food and wine as well.

Her book is a rallying cry to the core benefits agricultural biodiversity. A dive into the science of the soil and a straight on debunking of a series of myths around the use of sulfur, cultured yeast and additives in wine making.

It drew me in from the start.

You may not agree with it all. You will absolutely learn a great deal about agriculture and winemaking.

You will also be bowled over by her passion for the topic and her huge heart for the natural winemakers who are changing our view of what constitutes a great wine in today’s world.

And I promise you will be thankful for the section of the book with descriptions of over 100 recommended natural wines to track down and drink.

A really good read packed with info.

Useful for the American Ear

The original, U.K. version of "Queer as Folk" broke through many barriers. When I first watched the DVDs for Series 1, Parts 1-4, I had difficulty understanding the Manchester accent and some of the vocabulary. I kept replaying Vince's introductory speech until I could figure it out. The accents got easier with practice, although some characters, especially Donna, Nathan's friendly classmate, were still hard to understand. One gets the gist of it on the first pass-through, but it took more for my American ear to catch all the words. When I got the Series 2 DVD, the same issue arose. So, I checked Amazon to see if there were a QAF script available. There was; so I ordered it.
The good points: The script contains detailed staging and motivation directions. I can understand some conversations better now than before. The script contains Davies's original thoughts. There are some good color photographs inside (although none of them is risque).
The not so good points: The DVD uses a script somewhat different from what appears in the book. For example, Vince's prologue is not in the book. It would have been nice to have had additional, bracketed material to help the viewer parse out what was said on screen if it was not in the original script. The book is only for Series 1; I had been hoping for Series 1 and 2, combined. Finally, the quality of the paper in the book seems low.
Since the series has widespread popular support and since the accent issue is what kept the series off the air in the U.S., I am a bit surprised scripts were not distributed more generally in the U.S. to help potential enthusiasts feel more comfortable in knowing what was happening. Overall the book supplies extra clarity and insight into QAF.

This book is a "must have" if you like QAF!

The British series of QAF is available for purchase on VHS or
DVD. It is worth every hard-earned dollar ([and it] includes the "Making of QAF". If you are financially-
challenged at the moment, then at least purchase this book.
Do keep one thing in mind: the book is not the *exact* script
for the British TV series; actually, that makes it more
interesting because it contains all of the lines that were
removed for one reason or another. As an aside, do a Yahoo
search for the American series on VHS: it is available in a
wonderful, high-quality pirated version that has not been
cut because of time and censorship reasons. I'm much more
partial to the British version; and these scripts make it
even more rewarding.

Read the real climax of Queer as Folk as written by Davies. Better than the climax (Epi 7 & 8) as seen on Broadcast.

This book contains all 8 episodes AS WRITTEN for the series. What was written as Episode 7 and Episode 8 only exist, in PRINT in this edition. Because they were never filmed. Other scripts ideas for episode 7 and 8 were filmed instead
So This Is A Real Find if you want to see what the writer. who created QAF, really wrote as the climax to Queer as Folk.
I much prefer these two written episodes over the substitutions used for Theatrical release. The point of view in the telling is really personal at the end. Only Davies with his fixations would come up with this moving and justified ending.
I was totally satisfied.

A beautifully written book of stories by those who have lived through the heartbreak of addiction and yet find, in their hearts, incredible compassion and love. These stories of parents of addicts, children of addicts and the overwhelming love that brings them all together will leave you in tears. I could not put this book down, it was worth every moment I spent reading it.

About the Author
Masashi Sugiyama received the degrees of Bachelor of Engineering, Master of Engineering, and Doctor of Engineering in Computer Science from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan in 1997, 1999, and 2001, respectively. In 2001, he was appointed Assistant Professor in the same institute, and he was promoted to Associate Professor in 2003. He moved to the University of Tokyo as Professor in 2014. He received an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Fellowship and researched at Fraunhofer Institute, Berlin, Germany, from 2003 to 2004. In 2006, he received a European Commission Program Erasmus Mundus Scholarship and researched at the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, UK. He received the Faculty Award from IBM in 2007 for his contribution to machine learning under non-stationarity, the Nagao Special Researcher Award from the Information Processing Society of Japan in 2011 and the Young Scientists' Prize from the Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Japan for his contribution to the density-ratio paradigm of machine learning. His research interests include theories and algorithms of machine learning and data mining, and a wide range of applications such as signal processing, image processing, and robot control.
