A great tool for improvment

The Staright-A Conspiracy hits home with me.

What I liked:

+ It is a book which everyone can pick up.
+ It has a lot of insight and offers great explanations (even though I myself found it to be almost too thurrow).
+ Demonstrates the potential of every person and really convinces the reader that they, as well as everyone else, can pursuit and achieve greatness.

What I thought could be improved:

- The Straight-A conspiracy has a lot of small boxes with "interesting" and vaguely related facts. I myself found some of them amusing, but they were, generally, just distracting.
- (I cannot believe I am writing this, but) The book tries too hard to be easy to read. It talks directly to the reader in a almost silly way from time to time.

Overall, it is a book I wish I would have read five years ago; however, even to a student at university, such as myself, the book was a good read. If you are struggling with school or just generally want to improve your outlook on learning new things, this is one of many books which might help you.

Excellent high School Text

I teach a high school course for struggling students. These are kids who have tremendous aptitude but have lost confidence in their ability to be good students. They think of themselves as not smart, bad at math, and believe those "facts" will never change. Reading this book together has transformed their stinking thinking and given them simple tools to begin turning those grades around. Understanding that practice is what makes a genius and that all information was once new to everyone on earth has given them hope that they, too, can master everything from Algebra to Elizabethan sonnets. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Full of gems

This is a book, I wish like the lottery I had as a kid. I am a video gaming, internet addicted, collegiate C student and part time athlete. Although with shame I admit, for the first time in my adult life, I can say I read a book front to back multiple times just for myself. Not only is it full of "Aha" insight, it's easy to read. This is especially true for someone frustrated with learning complex new things well, or quickly (I'm pointing to myself). If you can't get your kid to read it, read it for them or read it to them. We need this type of wisdom as a country and as a species. Thank you Hunter Maats for breaking down and spelling out this problem. This is a well priced book. The delivery was also very satisfying.

About the Author

Jan Vansina is professor emeritus of history and anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was named the "Distinguished Africanist" of 1986 and awarded the Herskovits Prize for Kingdoms of the Savanna in 1967, garnering the two top honors given by the African Studies Association. Vansina is the author of more than twenty books, including Living with Africa and Paths in the Rainforests. 

Elizabeth Tonkin is professor emerita of social anthropology at the Queen's University of Belfast. Her interests include the social construction and uses of historical recall, and she is the author of Narrating Our Pasts.

Selma Leydesdorff is professor of oral history and culture at the University of Amsterdam and is co-editor (with Nanci Adler) of the Memory and Narrative series for Transaction Publishers.

Wonderful scholarship, a beautiful book

Inserts women rightfully back into the history of BMC alongside their male peers whose history has been fleshed out more in other publications. This catalog provides an interesting model for cross-disciplinary historical survey publications to come. Wonderful scholarship, a beautiful book, little seen works reproduced, accompanying one of the best shows of the year.

The catalog is excellent, well written, well designed and well researched. Buy it if you did not see the show ...or even if you did, as this exhibit is more about an important moment in 20th century art history and is not about an exhibit of major work, which for most of these artists was yet to come. It will cost a lot more when it is out of print.

About the Author
"Dipak Patranabis is presently Professor Emeritus, Department of Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata. Prior to that, he was Professor, Head, and then Emeritus Fellow at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, in the Department of Instrumentation and Electronics Engineering, After he completed M.Sc (Tech.) from Calcutta University, Prof. Patranabis had a brief stint in teaching Physics. Then he joined Damodar Valley Corporation as an Electrical Engineer. Subsequently he was in Guest Keen Williams Limited, Howrah, as an Instrument Engineer for over four years only to return to teaching and research at Jadavpur University, taking charge of the newly formed and research at Jadavpur University, taking charge of the newly formed department of Instrumentation and Electronics Engineering. He obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Calcutta at the early period of his teaching and research career. Dr. Patranabis has authored over 150 research papers and six books in Instrumentation and Electronics. He has guided many Ph.D. scholars and is still active in research and teaching. He was the President of IIST for two years, edited Journal of IIST for six years, and was honorary editor of the Journal of IETE for two years for the Circuits and Systems group. He was also the summary editor for Springer-Verlag for over 7 years and is a reviewer of research papers of many international and national-level research journals. He has also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Automations (ISA) USA."
