Brandy Barnes is the founder and CEO of Diabetes Sisters, one the fastest-growing online communities for women with diabetes. She lives in Durham, NC. A board-certified anesthesiologist and assistant professor of Clinical Anesthesiology at the University of Southern California, Natalie Strand received her M.D. from the Mayo Medical School, Mayo Clinic. An Excellent Guide to Diabetes for Women...and For Men Too

I just finished reading "A Woman's Guide to Diabetes. A Path to Wellness" by Brandy Barnes MSW and Natalie Strand MD. It was an excellent read. While written in plain, everyday language, for nonmedical people, it is based on solid medical and scientific knowledge. Further, it is published by the American Diabetes Association.
The book largely alternates between chapters discussing the medical/scientific aspects of diabetes, written by Dr. Strand and chapters addressing psychological/emotional issues, written by Ms. Barnes. But what really brings this book to life is that each author has "walked the walk" of living with Type 1 diabetes.
Natalie was diagnosed at age 12 and Brandy a bit later in her early teens. They have liberally shared their own personal history. The book is peppered with their own comments and experiences. They share their fears, struggles and concerns along with later successes and triumphs.
This is a book that sheds light on a very common, but often misunderstood disease. There are about 27 million individuals in the United States with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. When you add parents, siblings, spouses, loved ones to that figure, there are at least 100 million folks in the US affected by diabetes. The book doesn't skimp on the difficulties and challanges of living with diabetes, but ultimately points the way to success and wellness.
Finally, while this book is geared towards women's issues, at least 80% of the material applies to men as well. And perhaps the people that just might get the most out of this book are the spouses, significant others and parents of loved ones with diabetes. Now...an important disclosure...I am Natalie's Dad. But I am also a physician and the father of two Type 1 children, Natalie and her 37 year old brother, who was diagnosed just a year ago.
Even though as a physician, I know, and have learned a lot, about diabetes. But, as I read Brandy and Natalie's book, I was somewhat surprised about how much more I learned. I wish I could have had a book like this 25 years ago when Natalie was first diagnosed.
In their book, Brandy and Natalie ask the question "Are there things about diabetes that have actually improved your life?" The answer was "Yes!" And in many surprising ways. An increased appreciation of life, friends and family. A commitment to make a difference. Enjoying healthy nutrition and lifestyle.
For Natalie and I, I know our Father/Daughter relationship was strengthened and enriched. For her, diabetes was never an obstacle. She likes to say "Diabetes is a challange, not a limitation"...and perhaps even an opportunity.

I just finished reading "A Woman's Guide to Diabetes: A Path to Wellness" by Brandy Barnes MSW and Natalie Strand, MD. This is one of the first books on Diabetes that I authentically could identify and relate to. I like how it includes both Mrs.Barnes and Dr.Strand's medical and emotional perspectives. Although I do not have diabetes, I come from a family (both parents)
side with a long history of diabetes. This is a book I will positively recommend to each and everyone. My husband's family as well. Thank You, Ladies for your compassion and empathy in writing this book. Truly, Vickie Null

A must-read! Especially if you're new to living with diabetes!

Especially if you're new to life with diabetes, this book is a must! While there are so many books in the world that can give you straight-old information on diabetes, there are very few that can lift you up and remind you that you're not alone -- and this is one of those books! Nat and Brandy are real women, living real lives with diabetes, and their combined experiences and expertise provides a perfect mix of need-to-know-facts delivered in a way that is helpful, not lecturing or scary, with true life. Knowledgable, compassionate, and completely legit -- these women know what life is like with diabetes and they shared their wisdom in a way that is genuine and comforting.
