About the Author
Dr. Robert E. Franken is a professor Emeritus at the University of Calgary, with a research focus on better understanding curiosity and exploratory behavior. He is currently living part of the year in Vancouver, British Columbia and part of the year in the Rocky Mountains. Much of his research addresses understanding sensation seekers who are motivated by the need to experience varied, novel, and complex sensations and are willing to take risks in order to experience such.

FRANKEN: HUMAN MOTIVATION, FIFTH EDITION

I teach an upper division college course with this textbook; the course is, "Psychology of Motivation." I continue to use the 2002 Fifth Edition, because the newer Sixth Edition is 98% identical to the Fifth. First, the fact that this book has reached six editions shows that it is highly successful; it is the most popularly chosen text for motivation courses. EMOTION is a large topic in the book, with five chapters. Students have responded positively to the book. As is true with other upper division textbooks in psychology, the book has a "plain appearance," lacking color printing, and other features that are common with lower division textbooks. There is no study guide, and no review questions at the ends of chapters. Some topics overlap with other psychology courses: these topics are sleep, drug addiction, sexuality. One of the most interesting specialized topics is the sensation-seeking personality --- people who love sports that are "dangerous to life and limb." Physiological topics are also covered ---- most interesting of which is the role of the brain's amygdala in negative motives and emotions ---- the amygdala is the brain's seat of prejudicial beliefs. I put myself through college doing constrution work- since then I have worn out 3 copies of this book just looking through it and imagining how I would build different things. It has saved us money as well, because I have used it to show different remodeling contractors how I expect certain things to be done. Each new edition has had great additions made to them to keep up with new technologies such as solar.

Finally a useful construction book

I am very impressed with this book. The name "The Visual Handbook of Building And Remodeling" pretty much says it all. This book, which is approximately 1 inch thick and printed on high-quality paper, is beautifully illustrated with hundreds of full-color, isometric, and cross-sectional views of just about anything to do with the construction of a building. There are page after page of design guidelines including dimensions of just about any room in a home. Diagrams and dimensions of walks, ramps, level changes, kitchens and seating are clearly illustrated including the recommended dimensions. Brick sizes, brick veneer construction and various brick building tables are included. The cross-sections of every construction detail are clearly drawn with each part distinctly labeled. Table after table of easily understood joists and rafter dimensions, allowable spans, truss construction of various types with tables and again clearly illustrated. There are chapters on roofing, with asphalt,cedar and other shingles and flashings. Plumbing fittings are illustrated along with water wells and pumps, PVC pipe, sizing drain pipe, roughing in and dimensions. "Meet the Code", including a partial list of the requirements from the 2006 international residential code are included for many of the trades. There is also excellent coverage of electrical wiring for residential buildings including conduit, switches, lights, tables and cross-sections of each of these. I have only touched on the surface of what's available in this book. If you're planning to build a home from the ground up or just planning to do a little remodeling in a few rooms, you will find this book well worth the investment. Even a building contractor would find some useful advice and perhaps a few new ideas contained in this excellent book.

I don't often write reviews, but, I had to with this book. I am a very visual learner and I have to "see" things for them to fully make sense. Reading code text is extremely boring; so this book is amazing because it puts a lot of the code into pictures. I may end up purchasing a backup copy just in case. The ideas are clearly presented, there are no "brand bias" with things, it's very much a "Here's what you need to do" book.

The publication of this text, The Way to Perfection, has come about through repeated requests from our workers for a faith-promoting discussion of doctrinal principles and historical themes which justify the large place salvation for the living and the dead occupies in the life of every Latter-day Saint. After much hesitation on his part the author was persuaded, and appointed, by the Board of Directors of the Genealogical Society of Utah, to undertake such a work.   

The principles of the Gospel do not change. In connection with the lessons previously published, doctrines of the Church have been considered. This present text is not an attempt to give to the saints something new. The ordinances of baptism, laying on of hands, ordination, etc., are the same today as they have been through all generations since the beginning of time. Yet it is a fact, as every Latter-day Saint can say, that these principles which never change are in another sense always new. All who delight in the keeping of the commandments of the Lord are made to rejoice in every discussion of these principles. They never tire of hearing them. Yet old and familiar subjects may be dressed in new clothes; they need not always be presented in the self-same way; and it is always the application of Gospel truths in human lives which gives them their vital significance. It is hoped that the study and discussion of the principles here presented will inspire Latter-day Saints to be awake to their privileges and duties, to live more worthy lives, and to be more valiant in the service of God.   

This book has been prepared not only for study by genealogical workers, but for general use throughout the Church.

Principles of the gospel don't change

There is at least one principle of the gospel that changes. Read pages 101-102 to read what the church used to teach about race and the priesthood. Fortunately this is no longer taught officially, but it still is believed and/or taught by some unofficially.

I used both these texts as part of my doctoral course Management Decisions in Engineering at Kennedy-Western University. It is a powerful combination for an in-depth statistical study of Decision Theory & Application.

Anne Myers received her Ph.D. from the New School for Social Research.

Christine Hansen is currently Associate Professor of Psychology at Oakland University. She received her Ph.D. from Michigan State University. Her professional affiliations include the American Psychological Society, Midwestern Psychological Association, Golden Key National Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society, Sigma XI National Scientific Research Honor Society, and Society for Experimental Social Psychology. Her varied research interests--which have been funded by the NSF and NIH--include behavioral and personality effects of popular music, contemporary media, emotive information processing, and bioinformatics.
